Tesla Model 3 vs Model Y: which one is right for you?

The Model 3 and Model Y are Tesla’s two core models, sharing most of the same technology and the same Supercharger network. But they’re different cars built for different lives. This guide helps you pick the one that actually fits yours.

Model 3

The efficient sedan

Aerodynamic sedan shape, low profile and sporty handling. Tesla’s most efficient model, and the best-selling electric car worldwide in recent years.

Model Y

The family SUV

Compact SUV body, taller and roomier inside. The best-selling electric vehicle in the world for three years running.

Choose based on your profile

The best way to choose between the two is to think about how you actually use a car day to day. Here are the most common profiles.

Family with kids or pets

You need rear-seat space for car seats, tall teenagers or pets, and boot space matters every day: groceries, a stroller, luggage. The Model Y offers up to 854 litres of boot space and a noticeably roomier back seat. With the seats folded it reaches 2,138 litres of total capacity.

✓ Recommended: Model Y

City driving or professional use

You mostly drive around town and value a sleek, agile car. The Model 3 is more compact, easier to park and more efficient. Its low, sporty profile makes it the more elegant Tesla in the lineup.

✓ Recommended: Model 3

Frequent long-distance driver

You cover a lot of motorway miles and range is your priority. The Model 3 is lighter and more aerodynamic, which translates into more range from the same battery, especially on the Long Range trims. If maximising miles per charge matters most, the Model 3 is the more efficient choice.

✓ Recommended: Model 3

Active or outdoorsy lifestyle

You do sports, carry bulky gear, or simply prefer the higher driving position of an SUV. The Model Y gives you more height, better visibility and more load versatility. With the seats folded you can fit bikes, boards or any large equipment.

✓ Recommended: Model Y

Spirited-driving enthusiast

You enjoy driving and care about how a car feels behind the wheel. The Model 3 is lighter and more aerodynamic, with a sharper, more dynamic response. The Model 3 Performance rivals high-end sports cars in feel.

✓ Recommended: Model 3

First EV, tighter budget

This is your first electric car and you want the Tesla experience at the most accessible price. The Model 3 is the entry point into the Tesla lineup, with a lower starting price than the Model Y and full access to the Supercharger network and the brand’s technology.

✓ Recommended: Model 3

Frequently asked questions

Which is more reliable, the Model 3 or the Model Y?

Both are equally reliable. They share most of their components and the same underlying platform, so their reliability track record is practically identical. Tesla continuously updates both models via OTA software updates.

Is the Model Y too big to park in the city?

The Model Y is a compact SUV with manageable dimensions for urban driving. High-resolution front and rear cameras, together with built-in parking assistance, make manoeuvring in tight spaces much easier. Most city owners don’t find its size an issue.

Which one uses less electricity?

The Model 3 is somewhat more efficient thanks to its lower, more aerodynamic shape and lighter weight. In real-world use, the Model 3 can cover more miles from the same battery charge, especially at higher motorway speeds.

Can I fit a bike inside the Model Y?

Yes. With the rear seats folded, the Model Y offers up to 2,138 litres of load capacity — enough for bikes, boards or large sports equipment without needing an external bike rack.

Are there government incentives for buying either model?
